About the Cover

Freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a growing health risk. To inform more effective illness prevention strategies, this month’s cover article examined awareness, behaviors, perceptions, and communication preferences related to health and HABs. Focus groups were conducted with adults who frequent freshwater bodies for recreation. Participants reported moderate awareness of HABs and perceived low personal risk from HAB exposure. Further, participants reported trusting officials and following water advisories if they saw them. Public health practitioners can use the insights gained from this study to inform future audience research, HAB risk communication, and illness prevention.
